Chorioamnionitis

In pregnancy, inflammation of the amniotic membranes typically after their rupture. The cause is an infection by bacteria that reach the uterus through the vagina. Symptoms in the mother include fever, abdominal pain and cramping, a drop in blood pressure, and tenderness of the uterus. Symptoms in the fetus include a higher than normal heart rate.


Inflammation of the amnion, usually secondary to bacterial infection. This condition is an obstetric emergency that may cause conditions such as pneumonia, meningitis, or sepsis in the neonate, and bacteremia or sepsis in the mother.


Inflammation of the amniotic sac protecting the fetus. Caused by organisms in the fluid surrounding the fetus in the amniotic sac.
