A hospital medical staff that limits hospital privileges, including admissions and care of patients, to doctors who are accepted as members of staff. Membership, which may be renewed periodically, is granted by a hospital Board of Trustees on the recommendation of a credentials committee. The applicant for closed staff membership usually must agree to contribute a share of his or her time to certain professional medical duties associated with hospital functions, such as supervising interns or residents.
