Colon cleansing

A controversial procedure intended to flush toxic substances from the bowel. Colon cleansing, which is also called colonic irrigation, is a method of detoxification based on the idea that impacted fecal material can stick to the lining of the colon instead of being excreted in the normal manner. Colon cleansing is accomplished by administering through a rubber tube an enema of 20 gallons or more of warm water, coffee, herbs, or enzymes intended to promote healing. Advocates of this procedure believe that toxic waste products in the fecal material are reabsorbed by the colon and cause a variety of symptoms, including bad breath, headaches, allergies, and digestive disorders. Most doctors object to the procedure on the grounds that irrigation removes essential protective bacteria that naturally occur in the intestines. Critics of colon cleansing also point out that eating a healthy, high-fiber diet is a better way to prevent constipation and fecal impaction and warn that serious infections can be introduced in the colon.

Colon hydrotherapy involves the infusion of fluids, typically consisting of water or various mixtures, through the rectum and into the colon. This is done with the intention of purifying the colon by eliminating any residual fecal matter that may cause disruptions to regular bodily processes.
