Commitment

A legal process for admitting a mentally ill person to a psychiatric treatment program. The legal definition and procedure vary from state to state although commitment usually requires a court or judicial procedure. Commitment may also be voluntary.

The legal process by which a court orders the admission of an individual to a psychiatric facility or unit. The procedure may be criminal or civil, and voluntary or involuntary.


The legal procedure for hospitalization of a patient who may not be competent to choose to be hospitalized. Confining a patient without his or her consent may be necessary, for example, to care for suicidal patients, patients with altered mental status, or persons with certain contagious diseases.
