Commonwealth fund

Established in 1918 with the objective to do something for the welfare of humanity.


A philanthropic foundation created in 1918 by Anna M. Harkness to “enhance the common good”. The Fund supports programs in the areas of improving health care services and the well-being of minority Americans, the elderly and the young. The Fund emphasizes promotion of healthy behavior and prevention of illness, and also conducts independent research in the areas of health and social policy issues. In 1986, the Fund was given the assets of the James Picker Foundation, in support of Picker programs to advance the Fund’s mission.
