Complementary DNA (cDNA)

A fragment of DNA complementary to a specific RNA sequence, synthesized from it in vitro by reverse transcription. cDNA probes can be used for the identification of pathogenic bacteria in dental plaque samples.

A complete or partial copy of a mature mRNA transcript which does not contain intronic sequences.

A single-stranded DNA that is complementary to a strand of RNA. The DNA is synthesized in vitro by an enzyme known as reverse transcriptase. It is a DNA copy of mRNA (messenger RNA) and this “rebukes” the Central Dogma.

A double stranded copy of a single-stranded RNA molecule, made by reverse transcriptase, an enzyme used by retroviruses such as HIV-1.
