Conserved, (nomen conservandum, nom. cons.)

(In nomenclature) a name, the use of which is officially permitted despite its contravention of one or more articles of the I.C.B.N.


A term used to describe a domain (region) of a molecule on the surface of a rapidly mutating microorganism (e.g., the AIDS virus) that remains the same in all, or most, variations of that microorganism. If that conserved region is suitable to act as an antigen (hapten, epitope), it may be possible to create a successful vaccine against that microorganism that would otherwise be unsuccessful due to the fact that the rapid mutation would cause it (the AIDS virus) to appear to be “different than the one (antigen) the vaccine was designed against.


A fruit conserve is akin to jam in texture, but typically composed of various fruit varieties and, at times, mixed with raisins and nutmeats.


A conserve is a type of fruit preparation that contains two or more fruits combined with sugar. It is very similar to jam, with the key difference being that a conserve often includes raisins and nuts in the recipe.
