Coprolalia

The involuntary use of profane words seen in patients with tourette’s disorder.


Sexual arousal through the use of lewd language or of hearing lewd language.


Coprolalia, a symptom of Tourette syndrome (TS), is the uncontrollable use of obscenities and curse words. Although popularly associated with TS, only 8-15% of affected individuals manifest coprolalia. Apeak in the severity of coprolalia often occurs in adolescence, with some reduction in adulthood. A variety of basal ganglia and limbic system abnormalities have been linked to development of TS.


A rare condition in which a person involuntarily utters words seen as vulgar or obscene; literally, “fecal speech.” Coprolalia often results from a brain dysfunction or mental disorder, such as schizophrenia, or from a condition such as Tourette’s syndrome.


Repetitive use of obscenities in speech, as may occur involuntarily in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.


Involuntary verbalizations or gestures that are socially inappropriate, vulgar, obscene, or racist due to Tourette’s syndrome.


An inherited condition, usually beginning in childhood. It presents with motor tics and with irrepressible, explosive, occasionally obscene, verbal ejaculations.


The use of vulgar, obscene, or sacrilegious language, seen in schizophrenia and Tourette’s syndrome.


The involuntary utterance of profane words or phrases is commonly referred to as coprolalia.


An overwhelming urge to use vulgar language compulsively.
