Cross-section

A small part of something, taken to be representative of the whole.

A sample cut across a specimen for examination under a microscope.

To cut across a plane to study tissue or cells.

Usually, an image of an object, such as a part of the body, which is at right angles to the long axis of the object. A cross-sectional image of the leg, for example, is one which shows the leg as though it had been cut across at that location, for example, the middle of the thigh. Such views are made by special imaging techniques.

A section perpendicular to the long axis of an organ.
