Crossmatching

The process of matching a transplant donor to a recipient as closely as possible to avoid tissue rejection.

Procedure used by blood banks to determine the compatibility of a donor’s blood with that of a potential transfusion recipient after initial typing has been done.

Determining the compatibility of a donor’s blood with a recipient’s blood prior to blood transfusion.

A laboratory test to determine a person’s blood group by identifying the proteins on the red blood cells; also known as blood typing and ABO typing. Cross-matching is important for determining the safety of blood transfusions. Cross-matching is also important for women during pregnancy.

The process of mixing a sample of the donor’s red blood cells with the recipient’s serum (major cross matching) and mixing a sample of the recipient’s blood with the donor’s serum (minor cross-matching). It is done before transfusion to determine compatibility of blood.
