Cyclooxygenase

Key enzyme of prostaglandin biosynthesis.

Two forms exist, COX I and COX II. It is the enzyme responsible for the formation of eicosanoids, particularly those that act as inflammatories. COX I is a constitutive enzyme present in most cell types and works under noninflammatory conditions. COX II is inducible in cells as part of an inflammatory response to injury or irritation. COX II is the target of several prescription anti-inflammatory drugs useful in the treatment of arthritis.

One of several enzymes (e.g., COX-1, COX-2) that make prostaglandins from arachidonic acids. They play a central role in inflammatory diseases, blood clotting, pain, and cellular proliferation.

A function performed by prostaglandin synthase.
