It is widely utilized for cancer screening purposes, such as in the cervical smear test, to identify potential cancerous changes. Additionally, cytology plays a crucial role in confirming cancer diagnoses. In the field of antenatal screening, it is increasingly used to identify certain fetal abnormalities. The examination of cells obtained from body fluids allows doctors to determine the underlying causes of conditions like pleural effusion (accumulation of fluid around the lungs) and ascites (abnormal fluid buildup in the abdominal cavity). By analyzing these cells, cytology aids in distinguishing between cancerous and infectious conditions, providing valuable diagnostic insights for appropriate management and treatment decisions.


In cytology, cells are collected through various procedures, including scraping or fine-needle aspiration biopsy. These techniques allow for the retrieval of cells from specific sites for diagnostic purposes. In the context of antenatal tests, cells from the amniotic fluid or the chorionic villi surrounding and protecting the developing fetus in the uterus are obtained through procedures such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. By acquiring these cellular samples, healthcare professionals can conduct detailed analyses, providing crucial information about the genetic composition, development, and potential abnormalities of the fetus.
