Cytoplasmic inheritance

Hereditary transmission dependent upon the cytoplasm or structures in the cytoplasm rather than the nuclear genes.

The inheritance of characters controlled by factors present in the cell cytoplasm rather than by genes on the chromosomes in the cell nucleus. Cytoplasmic inheritance is known to occur in lower animals and in plants but has not so far been found in man.
