Desquamation refers to the shedding of scales or small sheets from the surface of the epidermis, which is the outer layer of the skin. This phenomenon is commonly observed in seborrheic dermatitis and ichthyosis, an inherited skin condition characterized by scaling. Furthermore, skin desquamation can occur following illnesses accompanied by fever, especially scarlet fever.

The process of skin flaking or peeling off. In cases of arsenic poisoning, the top layer of the skin may completely shed, leading to a cloud of skin flakes falling to the ground when clothes are removed. A more subtle form of this skin shedding can also occur after an illness like scarlet fever.
