Dietary supplements are compounds that can be consumed in addition to an individual’s general food intake. Supplements can include a wide variety of compounds and mixtures including vital nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, proteins, amino acids, lipids, essential fatty acids, or carbohydrates. Other dietary supplements include herbs and botanicals, or chemicals extracted from these sources, as well as molecules produced in metabolism such as hormone and nutrient metabolites. Dietary supplements are regulated by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which is described in the previous entry.


A product (other than tobacco) taken by mouth that contains a “dietary ingredient” intended to supplement the diet. Dietary ingredients may include vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, and substances such as enzymes, organ tis¬ sues, and metabolites.


Any product that is taken by mouth, that can contain a dietary ingredient, and that is labeled as a dietary supplement.
