Dilatation

The act of dilating.

Expansion or enlargement of an organ or vessel.

The act of making a hollow space or a passage in the body bigger or wider.

Expansion of the pupil of the eye as a reaction to bad light or to drugs.

Enlargement of an organ or an opening, occurring as a normal physiologic response (e.g., widening of the pupil of the eye as a response to decreased light, widening of the uterine cervix during labor to allow passage of the fetus) or produced deliberately, as in the use of drugs to widen the pupil of the eye or the use of a dilator to open the cervix.

The enlargement or expansion of a hollow organ (such as a blood vessel) or cavity.

A condition characterized by the enlargement or stretching of a body cavity, passage, or opening can occur as a result of natural physiological processes, such as childbirth, or due to the impact of a disease.

The term “dilatation” is also utilized in medical procedures aimed at achieving enlargement, as exemplified by the procedure known as dilatation and curettage.
