Dilation

A condition in which an opening of the body is stretched, during childbirth, during a medical procedure, or as a result of disease.


A widening of the cervical opening. Prior to delivery, the cervix dilates 3.5—4 in.


During labor, the widening of the cervix, generally to about four inches, in preparation for the actual delivery of a baby.


Enlarging or expanding of something. Dilation takes place when a hollow organ or body cavity stretches or gets bigger. For example, dilation occurs when the pupils of the eyes widen in dimly lit surroundings.


Expansion of an orifice with a dilator.
