Divination

Tree medicine isn’t simply harvested and worked like a biomedicine: it has a recognized metaphysical and spiritual content. As such divination plays a role in what medicine to use, how much, and for which individual. Problems can be addressed by a skilled diviner; thus it is its own healing modality in African holistic medicine.

The art and practice of fortune-telling. e ascertaining of hidden knowledge, inaccessible to the rest of humanity through ordinary sensory investigation by the diviner using supernatural or magical means. For example, the foretelling of future events, the finding of lost objects, or the revelation of hidden character traits. Divination is found in all civilizations, ancient and modern, and in all places. Sometimes it exists with the endorsement of religion, sometimes not. Christianity, Islam and Buddhism are generally opposed to it: They say that the diviner’s mediation between this world and the spiritual world assumes the mantle of a priest without the responsibility, the training, and the backing of a church and that this could be harmful.

There are two main systems of divination: the interpretative, in which various accumulated data are assessed, as in Astrology or the Tarot Cards, and the oracular, in which the fortune-teller enters into a special psychic state, such as a trance, and transmits information to the client. But the differences are not clear-cut because diviners in both groups believe themselves to have some psychic powers.
