Docusate sodium

A laxative. Docusate sodium (Colace, Senokot) softens stool to facilitate elimination for a person who should not strain, such as a person who has inflamed hemorrhoids. Docusate sodium is used to prevent and treat constipation and is available without prescription, but it is ineffective if used on a long-term basis.

A faecal-softening agent used to treat constipation. It can be given orally or as a rectal suppository.
