Drainage

In medicine, the creation of an opening through which accumulated pus can escape, especially in purulent infections.


The removal of liquid from the site of an operation or pus from an abscess by means of a tube or wick left in the body for a time.


Drawing off of fluid from a body cavity, usually fluid that has accumulated abnormally.


The drawing off of fluid from a cavity in the body, usually fluid that has accumulated abnormally. For example, serous fluid may be drained from a swollen joint, pus removed from an internal abscess, or urine from an overdistended bladder.


The flow or withdrawal of fluids, such as blood, infused saline, pus, and collected debris, from a cavity, organ, surgical site, or wound.
