Dressing

Sterile gauze or compresses of various sizes applied and fixed in position for the protection of a wound.


A covering or bandage applied to a wound to protect it.


Materials used to cover and protect a wound; a dressing is also called a BANDAGE. Dressings vary in type and in the material used to make them. Some dressings are made of antiseptic gauze, for example, while others are made of dry gauze or absorbent cotton. A pressure dressing is one in which pressure is exerted on the area covered to prevent the buildup of fluids in underlying tissues or to stop bleeding; pressure dressings are used for burns and skin grafting. Depending on the location of the wound, dressings are held in place with tape, bandages, or binders.


Material applied to a wound or diseased part of the body, with or without medication, to give protection and assist healing.

A clean, absorbent cloth, usually made of gauze, which is applied to a wound.


These are safeguards applied to injuries, with the purpose of soaking up blood or other bodily fluids, averting potential infection, or preserving moisture. Compression bandages are used to control bleeding or minimize swelling at the injury location.


A protective layer placed over a wound to shield it from additional harm and facilitate healing.
