Drill

A cutting instrument used to create holes by rotary motion.

A tool which rotates very rapidly to make a hole, especially a surgical instrument used in dentistry to remove caries.

The instrument most commonly used for the removal of caries and for the drilling and cutting of bone in dental surgery. The original mechanically driven handpiece has been largely replaced by the air turbine, which works at a very much higher speed. In such drills the burr that actually cuts the tooth must be cooled by a stream of water to prevent heat damage to the pulp and postoperative pain.

A device for rotating a sharp and shaped cutting instrument, used for preparing teeth for restoration and in orthopedics.
