Family history

Part of a patient’s medical history in which questions are asked about the incidence and prevalence of specific diseases and disorders in his/her family in an attempt to ascertain whether the patient has a hereditary or familial tendency toward a particular disease.


A record of the state of health and medical history of members of the patient’s immediate family, which may be of interest to the physician because of genetic or familial tendencies noted.


A record of the current and past illnesses of a person’s parents, brothers, sisters, children and other family members. A family history shows the pattern of certain diseases in a family, and helps to determine risk factors for those and other diseases.


The parts of fruits, vegetables and grains that cannot be digested. Also called bulk or roughage.
