Fauces

The passage leading from the back of the mouth into the pharynx.


The throat of the corolla or calyx [unusual term, not recommended].


An opening between the tonsils at the back of the throat, leading to the pharynx.

The opening leading from the mouth into the pharynx. It is surrounded by the glossopalatine arch (which forms the anterior pillars of the fauces) and the pharyngopalatine arch (the posterior pillars).


The opening between the mouth and throat. It is bounded above by the soft palate, below by the tongue, and on either side by the tonsil. In front of, and behind, the tonsil are two ridges of mucous membrane, the anterior and posterior pillars of the fauces.


The constricted opening leading from the oral cavity to the oropharynx. It is bounded by the soft palate, the base of the tongue, and the palatine arches. The anterior pillars of the fauces are known as the glossopalatine arch, and the posterior pillars as the pharyngopalatine arch.
