Filling

A surgical operation carried out by a dentist to fill a hole in a tooth with amalgam.

The operation of inserting a specially prepared substance into a hole drilled in a carious tooth. A temporary filling is used to relieve the pain of a deep cavity and is replaced later with a permanent filling. It usually consists of a stiff mixture of zinc oxide and clove oil, which sets hard in about 12 hours. Zinc phosphate or calcium hydroxide are basic variants. Various substances may be used for permanent fillings.
