Fissure

Groove, natural division, cleft, slit, or deep furrow in organs; an ulcer or cracklike sore.


A crack or groove on a surface.

A term applied both to clefts of normal anatomical structure and also to small narrow ulcers occurring in skin and mucous membrane. The latter type of fissure occurs especially at the corners of the mouth and at the anus.


A crack in the skin that penetrates the dermis. Examples are severely cracked and/or chapped  ands or lips.


A fissure refers to a crevice or indentation, which can either be a natural occurrence or an abnormality. For example, a dental fissure is a natural flaw in a tooth’s enamel where decay typically begins. The Sylvian fissure is a prominent indent that divides the brain’s temporal lobe from the frontal and parietal lobes. An anal fissure refers to a rip that happens within the anal canal.
