Focus group

In research, a panel, selected to be representative of a population, interviewed on a topic of interest. Probes determine the popularity of various comments and points of view and the depth of feeling toward them. There may also be trials of material to determine how the panel’s reactions could be changed.


A discussion group of lay people brought together under professional guidance to discuss issues such as care.


A group of individuals convened to give their thoughts on a given subject. Focus groups are being used, for example, in market research.


An assembly of individuals affected by a specific subject (e.g., a disease, health care delivery system, marketed service, professional or management issue) to solicit and study their opinions, identify interests, and make strategic plans to meet expressed needs.
