Follicle-stimulating hormone

A hormone secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland stimulates the primary graafian follicles to develop to the point of ovulation. It also stimulates the development of the seminiferous tubules and maintains the process of spermatogenesis.

A hormone produced by the pituitary gland which stimulates ova in the ovaries and sperm in the testes.

A sex hormone that stimulates the development of egg and sperm cells.

FSH is a hormone released by both women and men from the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. In women between puberty and menopause, the monthly menstrual cycle begins when FSH is released and transported by the blood to one of the ovaries. FSH stimulates the ovary to release a mature egg in the process called ovulation. FSH also signals the ovary to begin forming a follicle, which is a tiny cavity that holds and supports each egg. The female hormones estrogen and progesterone and a small amount of male hormones, called androgen hormones, are produced and secreted in response to stimulation of FSH. These hormones have a vital role in the reproductive cycle. In men, FSH stimulates the testicles to produce sperm.

A hormone synthesized and released by the anterior pituitary gland. FSH stimulates ripening of the follicles in the ovary and formation of sperm in the testes. It is administered by injection to treat sterility due to lack of ovulation, amenorrhea, and decreased sperm production. Stimulation of ovulation by FSH may, in some cases, lead to multiple pregnancy.

A hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland which stimulates the formation of follicles in the ovary each menstrual cycle and of spermatocytes in the testis. Its production is under hypothalamic control, and in the female there is feedback inhibition by oestrogens from the developing follicle.

A hormone secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary that stimulates maturation of the ovarian follicles in women. In men, the hormone is important in maintaining spermatogenesis.

A hormone produced by the pituitary gland that acts in females to stimulate estrogen production and the maturation of egg cells, and in males to stimulate sperm production.

A hormone produced by the pituitary gland that is involved in regulating the activity of the sex glands. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) works along with luteinizing hormone (LFI) to stimulate the development of the graafian follicle, a sac that contains eggs in the ovary.

A protein hormone used in conventional medical therapy in an attempt to increase production of sperm in men (inside the follicles of the testes).

Secretion of the pituitary gland that stimulates the growth and maturation of the Graafian follicles in the ovary or the production of sperm in the testes.

FSH is a hormone released by both women and men from the pituitary gland at the base of the brain.

The pituitary hormone responsible for stimulating the ovaries to develop egg-containing sacs called follicles is known as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). FSH is associated with the increase in estrogen production throughout the menstrual cycle. An elevated FSH level, specifically above 40, is indicative of menopause.

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a gonadotropin hormone produced by the pituitary gland that exerts its effects on the ovaries or testes. In women, FSH initiates the maturation of an egg follicle in the ovary during the first week of the menstrual cycle, preparing it for ovulation. In men, FSH stimulates the production of sperm in the testes. FSH is used medically to treat specific types of infertility.
