Fontanel

One of several membranous intervals at the angles of the cranial bones in the head of an infant.

One of two membrane-covered soft spots in the skull of a newborn infant, which close as the cranial bones develop, usually by 18-24 months of age. Fontanels may be bulging and tender in infants with meningitis and depressed in those with dehydration. Also called fontanelle.

Non-ossified membrane covering the anterior portion of the skull of a fetus; located between the cranial bones, commonly called “the soft spot”.

An unossified membrane or soft spot lying between the cranial bones of the skull of a fetus or infant.

One of the membranous gaps found amidst the incomplete junctions of the parietal and adjacent bones in the skull of a developing fetus or young individual. It earns its name due to its fascinating display of rhythmic pulsations.
