Foreign body

A nonnative substance in the tissues or body cavities.

A piece of material which is not part of the surrounding tissue and should not be there, e.g. sand in a cut, dust in the eye or a pin which has been swallowed.

Anything present at a site where it would not normally be found. Slivers, cinders, dirt, or small objects may lodge in the skin, ears, eyes, or nose or may be taken internally. If not removed, they may cause unsightly marks or tattooing of the skin and inflammation and infection of the tissue involved.

A foreign body refers to an object that is found within an organ or passage of the body where it doesn’t belong. This could occur accidentally, like inhaling or swallowing something unintentionally, or it could be deliberate, as in the case of a child inserting a bead into their nostril. The most common locations where foreign bodies are discovered include the airways, ears, eyes, rectum, and vagina.
