Branch of medicine concerned with the legal aspects of medical care, such as the cause of unexplained death; forensic pathology provides evidence used in the resolution of crimes involving human death.

The branch of medicine that applies medical knowledge to legal areas, chiefly to criminal cases. Forensic medicine is usually used to study injuries related to accidental trauma, chemicals, and violence, in order to establish the cause of a sudden or un-expected death. In cases in which the paternity of a child is disputed, forensic experts may evaluate DNA and establish blood type. Forensic medicine is also involved in establishing the time of a death, rape, or injury or other data needed in court cases.

The branch of medicine concerned with the scientific investigation of the causes of injury and death in unexplained circumstances, particularly when criminal activity is suspected. Such investigations are carried out chiefly by pathologists at the request of a coroner, in conjunction with other experts and police investigators.

That branch of medicine concerned with matters of law and the solving of crimes by, for example, determining the cause of a death in suspicious circumstances or identifying a criminal by examining tissue found at the scene of a crime. The use of DNA identification to establish who was present at the ‘scene of the crime’ is now a widely used procedure in forensic medicine.

Medicine in relation to the law; as in autopsy proceedings, or the determination of time or cause of death, or in the determination of sanity. Also, the legal aspects of medical ethics and standards.

Forensic medicine represents a field of medicine closely related to law, particularly criminal law. A forensic pathologist, a specialized doctor, examines bodies in cases where death seems to have occurred due to unnatural causes. Forensic experts may also conduct examinations on individuals who are reportedly victims of sexual assault.

Forensic scientists employ lab techniques to analyze body fluids like blood or semen discovered on or close to the victim, and compare these with samples collected from potential suspects. They also have expertise in ballistics and identifying fibers from materials like clothes. Furthermore, they might provide advice on blood types and genetic fingerprinting during specific legal investigations.
