Forensic psychiatry

A branch of psychiatry that focuses on interrelationships with civil, criminal, and administrative law as well as evaluation and specialized treatment of individuals involved with the legal system or incarcerated in jails, prisons, and forensic psychiatry hospitals. A branch of psychiatry dealing with legal issues related to mental disorders.


That branch of psychiatry (or psychology) that deals with the legal questions raised by disordered behavior.


The use of psychiatry in legal matters, especially in determining social adaptability of a person suspected of insanity; or the presence or absence of insanity, especially at the time a person committed a crime.


Forensic psychiatry is a specialized field within psychiatry that focuses on diagnosing mental illnesses associated with criminal behavior.
