A break in one or several of the bones in the arm, generally caused by physical trauma, undue pressure, or other injury to the arm. Immediately following the event that produces the fracture, there may be acute pain, localized tenderness to the touch, muscle spasms, and greater pain or numbness with movement or use of the arm, followed by numbness, tingling, weakness, or paralysis. A fractured arm is generally diagnosed by the presence of deformity and an evaluation of X rays. Generally, treatment is that the broken bones are aligned into an immobile position, usually with a cast or splint for a specified time. During the healing period, a sling may be used to support the arm and hold it stationary against the body. In more complex fractures, traction and surgical repair may become necessary.
