Frond

Leaf (lamina + petiole), usually compound, often used for ferns and palms.

The leaf of a fern or cycad.

Leaf of a fern or palm, or similar leaf-like structure.

A large leaf usually with many divisions.

The leaves of a fern. Fronds carrying spore-bearing organs (son) are called “fertile” fronds; if not, they are called “sterile” fronds. In some species the two types are of different appearance. The term frond is also used for the leaves of feather palms; the Latin frondosa when applied to many plants means “leafy.”

A large compound or much-divided leaf, as that of a fern, a palm or a cycad. Used for convenience to circumvent the botanical distinction between leaves and their component leaflets or segments, which non-botanists often find difficult to comprehend.
