Hatha yoga

Describes a set of practices designed to purify the body to prepare it for experiencing higher levels of consciousness, in particular, uninterrupted bliss; it achieves this by balancing the opposing polarities within a person (ha means “sun,” tha means “moon”) to achieve a state of union, which is yoga.


A slow-paced, physical form of yoga. Hatha yoga is the most familiar form of yoga in the United States. In hatha yoga, ancient postures (“asana”), breathing exercises (“pranayama”), and purification practices (“kriyas”) are performed to reduce stress and boost energy. Hatha yoga is also used to reduce mechanical stresses that cause physical pain. The traditional purpose of yoga is to attain enlightenment through meditation. Hatha yoga is sometimes called “meditation in action,” a discipline that goes beyond physical exercise to realign the person with the flow of nature.


A branch of yoga popular in the West that relies on breathing techniques and the use of body postures to attain fitness, relaxation, and enlightenment.
