Health and human services

A federal department established in 1953 as the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare to supervise and coordinate the following agencies: Food and Drug Administration, Office of Human Development, Public Health Service, Social Security Administration, Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration, National Institutes of Health, Center for Disease Control, Health Care Financing Ad- ministration, Office of Children, Youth and Families, and Office of Smoking and Health. In 1979, a separate Department of Education was established and the remaining agencies became the Department of Health and Human Services.


Community services designed to meet the needs of its people include mental health, social health, educational, emergency, and safety services.
