Health care worker

Generally, health care worker includes physicians, residents, interns, supervising nurses, nurses, and nursing assistants. It also can include emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and others who directly treat patients. Sometimes, health care workers are distinguished in reference to health care professionals (doctors). The area where the term comes up the most is in regards to HIV/AIDS. Some states have enacted statutes regarding HIV positive health care workers. Texas passed a statute giving the health care worker 2 duties. First, all health care workers must follow universal precautions when they come in contact with a HIV positive patient or that patient’s bodily fluids. Second, health care workers who themselves are HIV positive must receive permission to perform certain invasive procedures from a board and also solicit and receive patient consent.
