Health manpower education initiative award

A grant or contract under section 774 of the FHS Act (added by the Comprehensive Health Manpower Training Act of 1971, P.L. 92-157) which authorizes awards to health or educational entities for health manpower programs which will improve the distribution, supply, quality, utilization, and efficiency of health personnel and the health services delivery system. Support has been provided for the development of area health education centers (AHECs), the training of physician assistants, and the identification and encouragement of disadvantaged students with a potential for training in the health professions, among other activities. In fiscal 1975, funding was at the level of $12 million for AHECs, $8 million for physician assistant training, $6.7 million for career opportunity grants (disadvantaged students), and $19.5 million for other manpower initiatives.
