Heart murmur

An abnormal or extra heart sound caused by the malfunctioning of a heart valve.


The sound caused when a stream of blood rushes through a heart valve which has been scarred during an inflammation of the heart and its valves.


An unusual sound made by turbulent blood flow, sometimes as a result of valve disease.


Abnormal heart sound indicating turbulent blood flow, regardless of the cause. Some heart murmurs are benign and of no significance; others are signs of abnormal heart function. Also called cardiac murmur.


An abnormal blowing, whooshing, or rasping sound in the heart that is detectable with a stethoscope. A heart murmur results from vibrations caused by abnormal blood flow patterns.


A sound produced during the heartbeat due to the improper closure of a heart valve.


An audible sound occurring during the heartbeat as a result of a heart valve failing to close properly.
