Hippocrates’ body humor theory

One of the earliest body type theories, developed by Hippocrates. The theory stated that a person’s character could be determined through the identification of the balance of the four body humors: a. blood, sanguine (hopeful, cheerful); b. black bile, melancholic (sad, depressed); c. yellow bile, choleric (irritable, irascible); and d. phlegm, phlegmatic (apathetic, lethargic).
