Hirudin

An anticoagulant substance produced by leeches, which is injected into the bloodstream while the leech is feeding on a body.


An anticoagulant, present in the salivary glands of leeches and in certain snake venoms, that prevents blood coagulation by inhibiting the action of. the enzyme thrombin.


A substance present in the secretion of the buccal glands of the leech that prevents coagulation of the blood by inactivating thrombin. Hirudin can be used to treat acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina pectoris.


Hirudin is a substance found in leech saliva that acts as an anticoagulant, preventing blood from forming clots.
