Histocompatibility

Compatibility between the antigens of tissues from two individuals, important in transplants.

Ability of the cells of one tissue to survive in the presence of cells of another tissue, as in the ability of cells of a transplanted organ to survive in the presence of cells of another organism. A high degree of histocompatibility is necessary for a successful graft or transplant.

The form of compatibility that dep)ends upon tissue components, mainly specific glycoprotein antigens in cell membranes. A high degree of histocompatibility is necessary for a tissue graft or organ transplant to be successful.

Cell-mediated immunological similarity or compatibility.
