Homologous

Similar in origin and structure but not necessarily in function.


Corresponding in structure, position, origin, etc., as (a) the feathers of a bird and the scales of a fish, (b) antigen and its specific antibody, (c) allelic chromosomes.


Chromosomes or chromosome segments that are identical with respect to their constituent genetic loci and their visible structure.


With a shared evolutionary origin, the structure of two things does not have to be similar in form to be homologous (e.g. the forelimbs of a horse and the wings of a bat).
