Hot flush

A condition in menopausal women, in which the woman becomes hot and sweats, and which is often accompanied by redness of the skin.

Experiencing a sudden, transient redness on the face, neck, and upper body, often coupled with a feeling of warmth and typically succeeded by perspiration, is known as a hot flush. These are generally linked to a decrease in the production of the hormone oestrogen during or after menopause, and can also manifest following the surgical removal of ovaries. In severe cases, hot flushes can often be mitigated by Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), although its long-term use is not recommended. Alternatively, these symptoms can be managed with the use of clonidine, a medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure.
