Hydrochlorothiazide

A thiazide diuretic that can be used as an antihypertensive agent.


A diuretic drug used to treat high blood pressure and excess fluid retention. Hydrochlorothiazide increases the production or amount of urine by promoting the passage of sodium and water through the kidneys, thereby decreasing blood volume and forcing excess liquid and sodium out of cells and tissues where they have accumulated. These activities of hydrochlorothiazide lower blood pressure and relieve edema associated with heart failure.


A diuretic used to treat fluid retention (edema) and high blood pressure. It is administered by mouth, and side-effects can include digestive upsets, skin reactions, and dizziness.

Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic medication used to alleviate edema (fluid buildup) in individuals with conditions such as heart failure, nephrotic syndrome (a kidney-related disorder), and cirrhosis. It’s also administered for the management of hypertension (high blood pressure). Potential side effects include leg cramps, dizziness, rashes, and impotence. Rarely, the medication can cause gout and could potentially worsen diabetes mellitus.
