Hyoid

Relating to the hyoid bone.

A U-shaped bone at the root of the tongue. The hyoid can be felt from the front of the neck, lying about 2-5 cm above the prominence of the thyroid cartilage.

The hyoid bone is a small, U-shaped bone located centrally in the upper neck region. Unlike other bones, the hyoid is not connected to any other bone but hangs from the base of the skull via ligaments. It serves as a foundational point for the tongue muscles and the muscles at the front upper part of the neck. The hyoid bone could be broken as a consequence of intentional strangulation.

A U-shaped bone at the front of the neck serves as an anchor for throat muscles. In strangulation cases, this bone is often inspected and frequently found to be broken, suggesting significant pressure was applied to the neck.
