Hypopituitarism

Inactivity of the pituitary gland characterized by the persistence of childlike features and excessive fat.

Diminished pituitary gland activity.

A condition in which the pituitary gland is underactive.

Reduced or inadequate function due to pathology of the pituitary gland.

A disorder resulting from a deficiency in one or more of the pituitary hormones. Hypopituitarism can be caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland, inflammation of the gland, or a head injury that damages the pituitary gland.

Subnormal activity of the pituitary gland, causing dwarfism in childhood and a syndrome of impaired sexual function, pallor, and premature aging in adult life.

Underactivity of the pituitary gland. It can cause dwarfism, delayed puberty, impotence, infertility, amenorrhoea, hypothyroidism, and hypoadrenalism. Causes include tumours, irradiation of the gland, sarcoidosis, and necrosis associated with post-partum haemorrhage (Sheehan’s syndrome).

A condition resulting from diminished secretion of pituitary hormones, especially those of the anterior lobe.

Hypopituitarism is a condition characterized by reduced activity of the pituitary gland, leading to insufficient production of one or more pituitary hormones. The effects of hypopituitarism vary depending on which hormones are affected. Possible causes include a pituitary tumor, abnormalities in the hypothalamus (a part of the brain), or injuries to the pituitary gland. It may also develop following surgery or radiotherapy involving the pituitary gland. The treatment for hypopituitarism involves replacing the deficient hormones.
