Idiopathic burning tongue

A condition characterized by a severe, recurrent burning or aching sensation in the back of the mouth, the throat, and the ear. There may be brief episodes of very severe pain in the tongue or elsewhere in the mouth, lasting several seconds or minutes. Talking or swallowing can trigger these episodes, but the cause of this condition is unknown. Burning tongue is a form of neuralgia (pain caused by nerve irritation or damage). Over-the-counter pain relievers may sometimes alleviate discomfort. Under medical supervision, prescription drugs are often helpful. Duration of treatment varies widely because symptoms of the condition may diminish or disappear.
