Ileal pouch

A part of the small intestine which is made into a new rectum in a surgical operation, freeing someone from the need for an ileostomy after their colon is removed.

A reservoir is formed using loops of the ileum (lower part of the small intestine) to replace a surgically removed rectum. In cases where an ileal pouch cannot be constructed, a permanent ileostomy becomes necessary.
