A moderate to severe degree of intellectual sub-normality that falls short of idiocy. The term is now obsolete, but roughly corresponds to an intelligence quotient of between 20 and 50. It is almost always caused by physical damage to the brain, and affected individuals usually require help and supervision throughout their lives.
